Genesis 12-25: God’s Grace in the Midst of Our Unbelief, by Robert Cheong
Do you ever struggle with doubting God’s goodness and grace? You can come up with plenty of reasons to question God when you find yourself in a strange place, when you are glaring at what seems to be impossible odds, when you face biological facts that challenge God’s promises, when you have been waiting for years with no change in circumstances, or when your fears grow bigger than God.
Abraham, Sarah, and Lot experienced God’s grace in the midst of their unbelief. As a Christian, God remains faithful to you in spite of your struggle to believe because He not only created and redeemed you, but He is also your Heavenly Father and Christ is your Shepherd:
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one (John 10:27-30).
The story of Abraham is a beautiful account that reminds us of God’s goodness and grace in the gospel: He initiates a faithful relationship with us because He is mercy and love. He reminds us of His promises through His word because we grow fearful and weary. He overcomes all obstacles because nothing is too hard for Him and nothing will stop His plans. He hears our cries because He cares for us. He keeps His hands on us because we often hesitate to follow Him due to our unbelief. He commands us not to fear because He is always with us.
So the next time you find yourself struggling to believe in God and his promises, turn to Christ, cry out for mercy, and rest in …
the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast (1 Peter 5:10).
