The name “TravelBlog” is a play on the name of our church family: Sojourn Community Church.

A sojourn is a trek, a quest. A journey from bondage to freedom, from darkness to light, made possible by the grace of God through His Son, Jesus Christ. Like the ancient children of Israel, like the writers of the Gospels, Acts and the epistles, we tell the story of God's work in our lives while we travel.

Getting Ready For Sunday: How To Prepare For Sojourn Gathered, 8-29-2010

Last week our pastor began the “What Is The Church?” series with an overview of 1 Timothy in a sermon called “Gospel Shaped Culture.”  If you missed Sojourn Gathered, you can:

This week, we continue studying 1 Timothy, the first of Paul’s three “Pastoral Epistles.” We’ll learn from 1 Timothy 2:4-7:

who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all men—the testimony given in its proper time. And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying—and a teacher of the true faith to the Gentiles.

Worship with us this Sunday as we study this passage together, remembering that “worship” isn’t just the time of the service when we sing.  Christ saves us to turn idolators into worshipers of God, who worship with all their lives.  And in our corporate (everyone together) assemblies, everything we do is an act of worship:

  • scripture reading
  • singing
  • greeting each other
  • communion
  • offering
  • sermon
  • prayers

This week, songs we’ll sing together include:

  1. “Only Your Blood Is Enough” from our Over The Grave album.  Hear it in its entirety at Facebook.com/sojournmusic
  2. “Nothing But The Blood.”  Hear a preview by Matt Redman at Last.fm

See you Sunday.

I love Redman’s reworking of “Nothing But The Blood”. Here is a live video link of Redman performing it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1YkWa5pm6Y

  2. Connie Boudreaux says:

In reference to 1 Timothy 2:3-4, I am looking forward to some wisdom and clarity from our pastor on this verse. I understand in context, the letter is instructing this younger believer in the faith, by the apostle Paul. Myself, having been “Armeneinized(sp?)”, for over 20 years, and coming back to my reformed roots, I need help in some passages like these to reconcile the clearly taught doctrines of election, predestination, called, chosen, etc. in other writings of God’s Holy Word. Also, the book by Dr. Bruce Ware,” Father, Son and Holy Spirit”, is wonderful on this explanation of submission. It does not mean inferiority. It is based on relationship. Submission to authority of any kind over you is God ordained, and the Trinity is the Perfect example of how it all works together, in relationship, to everyone involved. Can’t wait for Sunday! =)

  3. Timothy Alvord says:

I say this so much it losses its meaning, but best sermon I ever heard! Way to go Daniel!
