The name “TravelBlog” is a play on the name of our church family: Sojourn Community Church.

A sojourn is a trek, a quest. A journey from bondage to freedom, from darkness to light, made possible by the grace of God through His Son, Jesus Christ. Like the ancient children of Israel, like the writers of the Gospels, Acts and the epistles, we tell the story of God's work in our lives while we travel.

Getting Ready For Sunday: How To Prepare For Sojourn Gathered, May 2, 2010

20100405_0218This Sunday we enter into a series of sermons from the fifth book of the New Testament: the Acts Of The Apostles, commonly known as Acts.  Luke wrote this to be a continuation of the story he began in the Gospel Of Luke.

Our pastor will take his text from Acts 1, which contains the story of Christ’s ascension into heaven.  Luke spells out that his previous book described “what Jesus began to do and teach.”  Acts, then, would be about what Christ continued to do, through the work of His Church, in the power of His Spirit.  He promises the disciples in 1:8 that the Holy Spirit will come upon them and empower the Church to be His witnesses to the ends of the earth.

Jesus foretold that the early church would be agents of gospel transformation beginning from their home in Jerusalem and extending outward “in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth,” and this has certainly happened.  Let’s come together Sunday and celebrate our own place in this story, made possible through God’s grace to us.

We’ll sing one of Sojourn’s first original worship songs together: Jeremy Quillo’s “How Can The Heavens Hold You?” from our With The Angels CD.  If you don’t own that one, you can listen to “How Can The Heavens Hold You” from the mp3 link at sojournmusic.com. You can also find that album on iTunes — it may be several years old, but it contains some gems.

Other songs we’ll sing together this week include:

Gifted Response (We Will Worship You) preview Ashmont Hill’s version at Last.fm

Be Thou My Vision – preview Pedro The Lion’s version at Last.fm

Nothing Without You — preview songwriter Bebo Norman’s version at Last.fm

See you Sunday!
