The name “TravelBlog” is a play on the name of our church family: Sojourn Community Church.

A sojourn is a trek, a quest. A journey from bondage to freedom, from darkness to light, made possible by the grace of God through His Son, Jesus Christ. Like the ancient children of Israel, like the writers of the Gospels, Acts and the epistles, we tell the story of God's work in our lives while we travel.

Getting Ready For Sunday: How To Prepare For Sojourn Gathered, Oct. 24, 2010

Last week our pastor concluded a three-sermon series on the Book of Hebrews, part of our A.D. sermon series.  This series has taken us through each book of the New Testament this year, and will conclude with a four-week study of Revelation in December.

You can browse through all the sermons in the series and listen to any you missed — or would like to hear again — in the Resource library here at sojournchurch.com.

This week, come prepared to hear about the Church in action, from the epistle of James.  Some scholars have called James the “Amos of the New Testament” because of his denunciations of social injustice.  James calls us to live in a way that is consistent with what we claim to believe.  He rebukes those who are “hearers” but not “doers” of the Word.

Come prepared to engage honestly and openly with this book, as our pastor teaches from it.

This week we’ll sing one of the first original Sojourn songs, by Jeremy Quillo.  It’s called “How Can The Heavens Hold You,” and you can find it on our first album, With The Angels — download it from iTunes if you don’t have it.

We’ll also sing:

  • Laden With Guilt
  • Grace Upon Grace

Sandra McCracken wrote both of these great songs (the text from “Laden With Guilt” is an old Isaac Watts hymn).  Sandra is a great modern hymn-writer, whom we’ve borrowed from in Sojourn Gathered services over the years.

She and her husband Derek Webb will be coming to The 930 on Nov. 18 in a benefit for local charity Scarlet Hope.  Their tour “is an attempt to discuss songs, liturgy, and worship through music and conversation.”

But even if you can’t come to that, we’ll all benefit from singing these songs together Sunday, and worshiping through the reading of the Word.  See you then!
