The name “TravelBlog” is a play on the name of our church family: Sojourn Community Church.

A sojourn is a trek, a quest. A journey from bondage to freedom, from darkness to light, made possible by the grace of God through His Son, Jesus Christ. Like the ancient children of Israel, like the writers of the Gospels, Acts and the epistles, we tell the story of God's work in our lives while we travel.

Jesus Versus The Big Boss Man: Who Is Your Lord And God?

When Thomas the disciple felt the spear wound in Jesus’ side, his doubt evaporated and he exclaimed “My lord and my god!”  Christ’s resurrection was enough to prove to Thomas that “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.” (Colossians 1:15)

Sometimes our view of God is as different from Thomas’ view as night from day.  We may think of God as a soft grandfather, a computer programmer, a personal shopper, or as today’s entrant in the Images Of A Small God sweepstakes:

Demanding Boss God

Demanding boss god thrives where people are trapped in legalism, where they’re drowning in waves of guilt and an unbiblical notion that they can somehow earn their salvation.

  • Demanding boss god is DO religion.  Jesus Christ is DONE religion.
  • Demanding boss god says work your fingers to the bone, or else.  Jesus Christ says “Come, all you who are weary …”
  • Demanding boss god says “I’ll pay you when you deserve it.”  Jesus Christ says “You deserved hell, but I’ve paid off your sin debt completely.”

Which one do you choose?

One Response to Jesus Versus The Big Boss Man: Who Is Your Lord And God?

  1. Connie Boudreaux says:

There seems to be a moral compass in most of us that counterfeits the standard of the living God. Some of us have lived under the lie, of “trying to perform”, to please God, (ie, the demanding boss). The enemy has whispered to us, you’re ok, you’re doing good things, you’re ok with God just like you are, you’re not as bad as those “other people”. We look around and compare ourselves to each other, and become judgemental and even more self-righteous. Can you tell I am speaking from experience (and about myself only, by the way)! The standard God set was perfection, not being “close” to the standard. “Close” only counts in horseshoes and hand granades, I have heard it said. Thanks, Daniel for putting into contrast, which is a great teaching tool, to help us see how silly we can be when it comes to “our ideas” about God. Thank you for preaching from His written Word, what He chose to reveal about Himself, to us! Amen.(so be it)! Praise God for His Grace and Mercy given to us through His only begotten Son, Jesus, The Christ!
