Singing The Christ Hymn: Sojourn Songwriter On Using Colossians 1 As A Song For Worship
We’ll begin by studying a section of Colossians 1 that scholars believe is the fragment of one of the first hymns of the church. “The Christ Hymn” is an important, beautifully written text that expresses, in just a few lines, who Jesus was and is.
Sojourn recorded “The Christ Hymn” on our These Things I Remember album in 2005. Singer Rebecca Dennison arranged the Colossians text and wrote the music with Worship & Arts Pastor Mike Cosper. I asked Rebecca a few questions in a short interview for the Inside Sojourn podcast. Then after the 5-minute discussion, we played “The Christ Hymn” in its entirety from These Things I Remember.

- In this 5 minute audio feature, Rebecca answers:
- What made you decide to write a song based on Colossians 1:15-20?
- Is it more or less difficult to set words of scripture to music or to write new words in modern lyric patterns?
- How did you decide which English-language version of the Bible to use for the song?
- The music sounds very oriental or Middle Eastern. Where did that idea come from?
