The name “TravelBlog” is a play on the name of our church family: Sojourn Community Church.

A sojourn is a trek, a quest. A journey from bondage to freedom, from darkness to light, made possible by the grace of God through His Son, Jesus Christ. Like the ancient children of Israel, like the writers of the Gospels, Acts and the epistles, we tell the story of God's work in our lives while we travel.

The Curious Case Of Lachlan Coffey: Sojourn Dudes That I Met On The Men’s Retreat

I have been with Sojourn from the very beginning but really only knew a handful of people on this recent men’s retreat. So it became my mission to get to know some of these people I had been worshiping with for some time. Here’s a few early perceptions of some men I met:

Jeff Armstrong – Rockstar drummer extraordinaire for a good band called Wake The Day. Jeff has got some great hair…let me tell ya’. And one of the first things he told me was that he enjoys playing with fire. Note to self: do not make Jeff mad.

Jesse Stewart – This dude is cool. Real cool. He cracked me up because he reminded me of a Simpons character named Snake Jailbird…except less yellow complexion. Plus, he lives way out in Shelbyville near where I live. Sojourners who live in Shelbyville are a very rare breed and are on the extinction list.

Brad Caudill – Brad is good at every sport imaginable. He was going on one hour’s worth of sleep and still dominated Ultimate Frisbee. I cannot dominate anything even with 10 hours of sleep.

Garrett McAlister – Local bluegrass musician. Cool as a cucumber and seems like he’s been at Sojourn for years, but is actually pretty new.

Herbie – I can’t remember his last name, but his first is Herbie…how cool is that? With that first name, I’m not even certain that you need a last name. Herbie’s a baller and a good one. This intimidates me for some reason so it was surprising to me when he struck up a conversation with me to talk about youth group stuff at Sojourn. Herbie is cool.

There’s many more that I met and many more that I grew deeper in my friendships. One of my biggest takeaways was realizing the need for men like these to be a constant in my life, challenging me, speaking truth to me. If you get the chance to go on the next Men’s Retreat, do.
