The Judges Playlist Project: Cycle of Death, by Daniel Montgomery
The latest BC Blog assignment: feed me music for Judges. I’m in the office right now working on the first Judges sermon and it’s just too quiet in here. My assistant and I don’t have to shout at each other to be heard, and that’s just no fun. So, what’s happening in Judges? What needs a soundtrack? Well, Israel is caught in a cycle of death – peace leading to complacency leading to pain and eventually, after God sends a judge, peace is restored and it starts all over again. Lots of people die in this book, in very creative ways (read Jael’s story in Judges 4 to get an idea what I mean). There’s also all the Judges, called out of ordinary life to lead Israel back to God and out of oppression – men like Ehud and Gideon, and even a woman named Deborah.
I’ve got a little bit of a headstart on this one. For starters, we’ve got our very own My Morning Jacket singing Gideon. And Metallica is helping a lot with the cycle of death (Enter the Sandman particularly). What else is out there? You know the drill…
“Everything Is Broken” by Dylan. It’s perfect:
Broken lines, broken strings,
Broken threads, broken springs,
Broken idols, broken heads,
People sleeping in broken beds.
and later in the song:
Broken hands on broken ploughs,
Broken treaties, broken vows,
Broken pipes, broken tools,
People bending broken rules.
There’s a band from California, Bodies of Water. They’re Christians (but not a ‘Christian band’), and import a lot of biblical imagery into their songs. They’ve got a couple great albums, and on the first (“Ears Will Pop & Eyes Will Blink”) is a big, majestic song about the cycle of sin and death – and being drawn back – called, “I Guess We’ll Forget the Sound, I Guess, I Guess.”
If Metallica was picked for “cycle of death” music because of their heaviness, then you definitely should listen to The Showdown’s “Chorus of Obliteration” album, cause they sure are heavy. They even have a song called “Dagon Undone” about Samson.
Ok, check it out.
-The Reign of Kindo “The Moments In Between”
Musically, this song is great. I think it can apply lyricly as well. Here are a few snipits of lyrics:
“All I see is me, in the center of all I seek”
“I declare my self this hour, simply dust that’s trusted with such a peculiar power…. Oh my god, what have I become?”
“Oh, the first time my gaze fell upon this place… how I shudder to think what I’ve become.”
Hey, at least you guys will have something to sing in the office. Ha ha.
These might be kinda ridiculous, but they’re what came to mind:
“Don’t you forget about me” – Simple Minds
“Here I go again” – Whitesnake
“Help me” – Akaline Trio (love this band!)
“Strongest Man in the World” – Two Loons for Tea
